April 2013 meeting
The April, 2013 meeting of Beekeepers of Shawangunk welcomed spring and bid farewell to winter . Social time with refreshments commenced at 6:30 and the meeting started at 7:00 as planned. A video on splitting a hive and setting up conditions that enable the bees to establish a new queen was presented. Much discussion on splitting hives followed with explanation of methods and results that should be attained. There were a number of displays and demonstrations on hand such as a Snelgrove board (double screen), a double NUC with ventilated bottom for splitting hives vertically and many types of Small Hive Beetle traps as well as bait recipes to control beetles. Input from various members and attendees made the topics come alive with enthusiasm.
The BOS membership list grew by another 9 members! A club shout-out to all members, new and old, is certainly in order! It is truly the members that provide the energy to make BOS a success. Much interest is being generated through the club website and upwards of 40 emails were received and answered during the month prior to the April meeting. There remains a lot to accomplish but we are confident that it is the energy of the members that will carry us forward. Learning and fun go hand in hand and both are abundant at Beekeepers of Shawangunk.
